Idea for a buildable observatory in Kerbal Space Program. Inspired by the Arecibo Observatory.

one thing think kerbal space program lacks is the ability to build static bases, such as relocating your base to a higher latitude (i think its latitude anyway... UPWARDS ON A MAP) or creating a permanent launch silo on Laythe or something

Lots a folks have been discussing that on the forums, and it seems to me like Squad might eventually follow through with it. Even if they don't, KSP's addon community's bound to come up with something.

i expect so indeed, but if it does happen, your base will be one of the first things i build

Description: 'During winter, the Kerbicebo skateboarding center / space tragedy memorial is operated as a deep space radio telescope. Unfortunately due to severe irreparable design flaws the observatory mainly picks up kerbal television, which has been repeatedly misidentified as extraterrestrial signals.'

That seems fairly Kerbal, yes.

as dragonstrider already said the cleaning process for that thing would be extremely problematical. there's would be no one crazy enough to build such a telescope (exept for kerbals maybe XD)
anyway, nice concept!

This facility already exists in Indonesia. It is the SETI program observatory.

Do you mean the Arecibo observatory? Because that's in Puerto Rico. Definite inspiration for the design, though.

Could that kind of tech even work in zero temperatures?

anything can be done at any temperature, provided you can pay for engineering and materials.

To a degree cold stabilizes air, reducing atmospheric distortion and high elevation makes for a thinner atmosphere, also reducing distortion. So from a practical standpoint, it works. If you can have the gear you need operate in the extream conditions.

The trick would be keeping the dish clear of snow. or just having a really awesome toboggan ride on Christmas.

Cleaning that dish is gonna be one hell of a job.

Could run heating elements underneath it that keep it just above freezing temperature, and have a drain at the base.

I much prefer the idea of a couple of hundred street sweepers permenantly cleaning it

Even better idea: mount a bunch of ant engines on a rover (with some more pointing upwards to cancel out the thrust) and drive around the inside of the dish, melting the snow with the exhaust.
